GMO's (continuation from post 1)

How many of you have eaten in the last 24 hours?  How many of you have grown your own food for every meal your eaten? I am not aware of where the wheat was grown for my bagel. According to the survey I gave a couple of weeks ago only 5 of you know what GMOs are. GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms and they are found in most of the food we eat. I have been growing crops alongside my father for my whole life and have seen the effects of both organic and GMO seeds. I have personally interviewed the head of Monsanto Mrs. Lisa Drake, and have fought for the use of the land and top ability to feed America to our highest ability. I have done and will continue to research GMO seeds. Today I hope to explain to you what the advantages are in genetically modified organism are and why farmers should be primate to use GMOs. First let me begin by describe the 2050 food crisis and  the decrease in the involvement agricultural, then I will continue by illustrating the benefits of GMOs through yields and growth, then I will explain the further advances in farming that will decrease the strain on the few that feed our great nation and growing population
first let me begin by describing the problem that is quickly arising in the lack of food.
I-  There are roughly 7,229,408,052 people in the world  according to the world calculator clock at 3:00 on the 27 of May 2014, that’s a lot of mouths to feed.

A-     The  population has risen in  extreme  numbers as you can see the numbers climb swiftly.
B  -Now the problem is there are less that 2% of farmers are feed that rising population and soon with the extreme regulations enforced on the crop production will not be able to feed that world  (farmersofamerica.org2014)
now we know that problem , let me enlighten you  on the growing technologies that farmers should have complete access to.
Genetically modified organisms are seeds that have been genetically modified to be drought resistant, bug repellent, have higher yields with less import.
I)  which would feed more?
A- there are two pictures of corn on this slide, which look to be more productive? Which looks like it could feed more mouths? And which would you rather eat?
B-The larger fuller corn is Genetically modified. This corn is a round up ready product that has been in existence since the early 90’s  and have been proven to increase yields without harming the safety of the consumer.
II)  The controversy in genetically modified organism are a hug deal in society today.
A-     There are some who say that GMOs are unsafe and unhealthy for consumption. In a class survey I took there was only one of you that stated they have never used GMOs and will never. 4 saying they are harmful and dangerous. But only 5 understanding what GMOs are.

B-      In a study conducted by several laboratories and USDA located  Kansas City Missouri in 2013, there was little to no cases of infection of the participants who have eaten GMOs lower case of cancer and more healthy tissue in the stomach wall when compared to those who eat strict organics.
C-“they are safe to consume” according to the USDA

now that I’ve explained the technologies let me explain why GMOs should be applied
III) the yields of GMOs are 3 times higher than that of organic.
A-The GMO repel bug without the need to spray, this decreases that amount of damage and lose of crops to insect.
1-      The blister beetle (alfalfa), Root warm (BT corn) are both repelled with the application of herbicides or GMO
B-They preform better less ideal situation such as drought and heat
1-      In the case of corn GMO seeds will increase the productivity by 20 bushels an acre When plaged with drought
2-      A bushel is 70 lbs
C-They take less maintained and pesticides and fertilizers because they are already installed in the seed instead of the ground giving a safer outcome
1-      through gene splicing they are more resistant to multiple impacts such multiple bugs all at once decreasing the need for fungicides and pesticides
D- there are less of a carbon emission because of less tractor work and tillage.
1-      With GMO products we are able to use that new ideas of no till or strip till situations
2-      Both of these practices only requires 0-2 rounds with the implements and tractors moving the soil minimal to retain the nutrients needed without leaving a huge carbon footprint left by making the tractor make several unnecessary rounds.
3-      By doing these practice us as farmers, are using less fossil fuels
4-       along with preserving the ground to the point where we can get multiple crop yield before having to restore the ground with the nutrients it takes to produce the crops needed.
(signpost- Now that we are knowledgeable about the upcoming food crises and the technology we a blessed with lets review what we have covered)

we have look at the growing population and decrease of farmers, we have also seen relating in safety research and finally we looked at the advantages of GMO seeds   In Conclusion being a farmer is one of the toughest jobs known to man. GMO seeds make our lives easier because of the increase yields and less maintained required. Farmers should be allowed by government to plant GMO seed at their discursion to fur fill the need of population and to suppress the ecological harm to the environment. So the next time you sit down to a meal remember to thank the farmer

  1. Morgan,

That's great that you have personal experience with farming. It's interesting to me that I never truly think about where my food comes from. I have a general assumption of what is good and bad at the grocery store, though my knowledge is fairly limited.

Seeing how GMOs work and create an easier work environment for farmers certainly shines a new light on GMOs. Grateful for the information you have provided!

    Cheers,

    Kelsey
