For the past hundred years the technologies have been advancing to allow
higher growth of crops, higher yields, with the least amount of work and land
used. Genetically modified organisms were first stumbled upon during the 80s. The first genetically modified organisms were
arranged in 1983 in the tobacco market. Today crops such as corn, wheat, barley,
cotton, sugar beets and many more are all associated with “round up” which is a chemical additive that will insure
higher growth with less water and repel bugs. Now the question is “Is it
health?” “are we playing God?” “Is it right?”
A compromise must be met on this issue. Is the possible health risks are
higher than the more total product? The
health risks have been scientifically proven but we will not know the future
risks until they are upon us.
Many scientific researchers have been done on
the side effects and overall effects of GMOs But none have come up showing that
this additive is related to infertility in females, cancer or much other
disease. The plants have hormone growth chemicals. Those allow the plant to
grow faster with less water and overall work from the farmer. These chemicals
are much alike steroids. A higher growth rate, a faster growth and more products
are all tied into GMOs. There has been
no evidence stating that there are any effects on humans or animals that would
cause sickness or other negative side effects. The unnatural use of chemicals
on a crop causes the crop to decrease
health standards. The added chemical poses as a problem as it is unwanted and
unnatural additive to the food and plant.
With higher plant growth more mouths both animal and human may be fed
insuring less of an increasing hunger problem worldwide. This Lab made plant
may save the world from hunger.
“Roundup Ready” crops are chemically advanced to repel bugs grow faster
and give more product along with be draught resistant. This chemical company
have followed USDA codes to a ‘T' to ensure safety. The constant surveillance
of the chemical compounds and laws of the region are always in play. The USDA
and FDA are constantly monitoring the air quality, crop health and, the health
of and the consumer. “Impersonal, more methodical, more technology driven forms
of surveillance and social control in our social control in our society than
ever before, and todays forms-and their sheer volume – are enveloping even
those who might be exempt to it.” (Staples 256) The large scale chemical
companies and warehouse farms are imposing technologies to be able to
constantly watch the product and the farmers using them. The guidelines are made to “keep us in line”
to keep the safety of the farmers product and the consumers use.
Organic plants have become more of an icon than a product. Pure, safe
foods that have no additives are overtaking the food industry. GMOs are
becoming harder and harder to see because of the competition of this ‘pure’
plant. Everyone always wants the next newest thing. GMOs are newer that organic
crops but the new age idea of health and proper eating, the GMO product is
getting tarnished and spoken against in the media and around the dinner table.
Microorganisms have gene altered
by adding antibacterial genes to plants, introducing genes to make the
organisms hardier and bigger, making new flavors and options to the menu while
adding yields to the farmers pocket
(explain the yields and new flavors more) in third world countries they have no
luxury as there is in America. Storage is minimal, fresh food is the only food
and verity is slim to none. The GMOs are
not only allowing Americas farmers to put food on their own tables but also
expanding the range to feed other countries thought exporting goods. GMOs have
increased Americas farmers yields by up to 40% this increase have dramatically
affected Americas agriculture economy and the world allowance to feed more
mouths. If other countries could get a chance at theses sciences and technologies
they would have a higher chance at being closer to self-maintaining their own
population.
Every day we eat, we consume GMOs. It is next to impossible to not have
some interaction with these crops. How, you may ask? Picture this; the vegetables
you buy at your local food market are most likely sprayed with chemicals
altering their genetic makeup. If not there were grown within 3 miles of some
that are allowing the air to drift over these “safe foods”. Next the meat you
have consumed was most likely fed with a genetically modified corn silage or
alfalfa, which would then transfer into the meat. Now you haven’t encountered
any yet? Ok: the bio-fuel that was put into your car is ethnical base which is
made from corn, most likely GMO grown.
The upper hand of genetically
modified organisms allows more growth with in return allows the farmer to put
less water and less work to obtain the same yields. GMOs are helping the local
farmer and the large scale farmer rancher as well, they are able to grow more
and feed more mouths. A farmer works tirelessly. As most people know a work day
as being 9 to 5 and going home to a happy family the farmer works 5-9 and goes
home exhausted from the previous days and wakes up more tired for the next day
to come.: There is no sick days, no holidays and no sleep-ins: the cows must be
feed every day at the same time and the crops mist be tented to. GMOs are a
form of enhancement much alike steroids or Adderall. They allow more growth
with less rest. This is a helping hand to the farmer. Crops have been around
since mankind. The early farmers starved because they didn't understand how to
enhance their production. Sciences have found compromises that ensure more
grown which in return gives more food and income but they have also found a
healthy safe way to produce the good. GMOs are a new way to feed the world.
GMOs may be a way of life for some but they need to be seen as a way of the
food industry of all.
What is one thing you could show or tell, out of all this information to someone who is a non GMO?
