GMO's (continuation from post 1)

How many of you have eaten in the last 24 hours?  How many of you have grown your own food for every meal your eaten? I am not aware of where the wheat was grown for my bagel. According to the survey I gave a couple of weeks ago only 5 of you know what GMOs are. GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms and they are found in most of the food we eat. I have been growing crops alongside my father for my whole life and have seen the effects of both organic and GMO seeds. I have personally interviewed the head of Monsanto Mrs. Lisa Drake, and have fought for the use of the land and top ability to feed America to our highest ability. I have done and will continue to research GMO seeds. Today I hope to explain to you what the advantages are in genetically modified organism are and why farmers should be primate to use GMOs. First let me begin by describe the 2050 food crisis and  the decrease in the involvement agricultural, then I will continue by illustrating the benefits of GMOs through yields and growth, then I will explain the further advances in farming that will decrease the strain on the few that feed our great nation and growing population
first let me begin by describing the problem that is quickly arising in the lack of food.
I-  There are roughly 7,229,408,052 people in the world  according to the world calculator clock at 3:00 on the 27 of May 2014, that’s a lot of mouths to feed.

A-     The  population has risen in  extreme  numbers as you can see the numbers climb swiftly.
B  -Now the problem is there are less that 2% of farmers are feed that rising population and soon with the extreme regulations enforced on the crop production will not be able to feed that world  (farmersofamerica.org2014)
now we know that problem , let me enlighten you  on the growing technologies that farmers should have complete access to.
Genetically modified organisms are seeds that have been genetically modified to be drought resistant, bug repellent, have higher yields with less import.
I)  which would feed more?
A- there are two pictures of corn on this slide, which look to be more productive? Which looks like it could feed more mouths? And which would you rather eat?
B-The larger fuller corn is Genetically modified. This corn is a round up ready product that has been in existence since the early 90’s  and have been proven to increase yields without harming the safety of the consumer.
II)  The controversy in genetically modified organism are a hug deal in society today.
A-     There are some who say that GMOs are unsafe and unhealthy for consumption. In a class survey I took there was only one of you that stated they have never used GMOs and will never. 4 saying they are harmful and dangerous. But only 5 understanding what GMOs are.

B-      In a study conducted by several laboratories and USDA located  Kansas City Missouri in 2013, there was little to no cases of infection of the participants who have eaten GMOs lower case of cancer and more healthy tissue in the stomach wall when compared to those who eat strict organics.
C-“they are safe to consume” according to the USDA

now that I’ve explained the technologies let me explain why GMOs should be applied
III) the yields of GMOs are 3 times higher than that of organic.
A-The GMO repel bug without the need to spray, this decreases that amount of damage and lose of crops to insect.
1-      The blister beetle (alfalfa), Root warm (BT corn) are both repelled with the application of herbicides or GMO
B-They preform better less ideal situation such as drought and heat
1-      In the case of corn GMO seeds will increase the productivity by 20 bushels an acre When plaged with drought
2-      A bushel is 70 lbs
C-They take less maintained and pesticides and fertilizers because they are already installed in the seed instead of the ground giving a safer outcome
1-      through gene splicing they are more resistant to multiple impacts such multiple bugs all at once decreasing the need for fungicides and pesticides
D- there are less of a carbon emission because of less tractor work and tillage.
1-      With GMO products we are able to use that new ideas of no till or strip till situations
2-      Both of these practices only requires 0-2 rounds with the implements and tractors moving the soil minimal to retain the nutrients needed without leaving a huge carbon footprint left by making the tractor make several unnecessary rounds.
3-      By doing these practice us as farmers, are using less fossil fuels
4-       along with preserving the ground to the point where we can get multiple crop yield before having to restore the ground with the nutrients it takes to produce the crops needed.
(signpost- Now that we are knowledgeable about the upcoming food crises and the technology we a blessed with lets review what we have covered)

we have look at the growing population and decrease of farmers, we have also seen relating in safety research and finally we looked at the advantages of GMO seeds   In Conclusion being a farmer is one of the toughest jobs known to man. GMO seeds make our lives easier because of the increase yields and less maintained required. Farmers should be allowed by government to plant GMO seed at their discursion to fur fill the need of population and to suppress the ecological harm to the environment. So the next time you sit down to a meal remember to thank the farmer

Jimmy Kimmel Proves People Against GMOs Don't Know What GMO Means

To some GMO is just letter, I understand that the letters may mean nothing, or everything but My point here is shouldn't someone who is endangering someone's livelihood and way of life at least know what the letters mean! GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS-  and what GMO's really are- Through this blog I hope to educate  and inform thoes who don't understand what GM seeds are to where they know the benefits!

Did you know?

When you hear that GMOs are bad for the environment do you take into consideration the added pesticides and herbicides needed for the "organic" seed to be healthy? Have you compared a GM seed to a truly organic seed (now I'm not saying look it up on google images I'm asking if you have actually seen the real thing) There is a vast difference in appearance and yields. Did you also know that in 2050 the population will be up to 9 billion and less than 1.5 percent of the population will be feeding the world?  Did you know that 90% of the GM seeds go to feeding livestock (which includes grass fed beef) Did you also know that a GM tomato needs almost 3 times less water than an organic tomato? I'm not asking you to eat only organic foods I'm simply asking you to understand that the money going to print and create the labels will come directly out of my paycheck. And as you say it is unsafe for human consumption, The USDA, in Kansas City tested the consumption and health risks involved with GMO foods. This study came back that less cancerous cells was found in those participants that consumed a strict GMO diet regularly, and also there were proven healthier because of the nutrition they received from a GM foods. Also during that study done by the USDA there were participants who volunteered to eat a strict Organic diet and these participants made more route visits to the doctor’s office for symptoms of ulcers, and more common cold cases.

Are the health risks true/ worth the yeilds

For the past hundred years the technologies have been advancing to allow higher growth of crops, higher yields, with the least amount of work and land used. Genetically modified organisms were first stumbled upon during the 80s.  The first genetically modified organisms were arranged in 1983 in the tobacco market. Today crops such as corn, wheat, barley, cotton, sugar beets and many more are all associated with “round up”  which is a chemical additive that will insure higher growth with less water and repel bugs. Now the question is “Is it health?” “are we playing God?” “Is it right?”  A compromise must be met on this issue. Is the possible health risks are higher than the more total product?  The health risks have been scientifically proven but we will not know the future risks until they are upon us.
Many scientific researchers have been done on the side effects and overall effects of GMOs But none have come up showing that this additive is related to infertility in females, cancer or much other disease. The plants have hormone growth chemicals. Those allow the plant to grow faster with less water and overall work from the farmer. These chemicals are much alike steroids. A higher growth rate, a faster growth and more products are all tied into GMOs.  There has been no evidence stating that there are any effects on humans or animals that would cause sickness or other negative side effects. The unnatural use of chemicals on  a crop causes the crop to decrease health standards. The added chemical poses as a problem as it is unwanted and unnatural additive to the food and plant.  With higher plant growth more mouths both animal and human may be fed insuring less of an increasing hunger problem worldwide. This Lab made plant may save the world from hunger.
“Roundup Ready” crops are chemically advanced to repel bugs grow faster and give more product along with be draught resistant. This chemical company have followed USDA codes to a ‘T' to ensure safety. The constant surveillance of the chemical compounds and laws of the region are always in play. The USDA and FDA are constantly monitoring the air quality, crop health and, the health of and the consumer. “Impersonal, more methodical, more technology driven forms of surveillance and social control in our social control in our society than ever before, and todays forms-and their sheer volume – are enveloping even those who might be exempt to it.” (Staples 256) The large scale chemical companies and warehouse farms are imposing technologies to be able to constantly watch the product and the farmers using them.  The guidelines are made to “keep us in line” to keep the safety of the farmers product and the consumers use.
Organic plants have become more of an icon than a product. Pure, safe foods that have no additives are overtaking the food industry. GMOs are becoming harder and harder to see because of the competition of this ‘pure’ plant. Everyone always wants the next newest thing. GMOs are newer that organic crops but the new age idea of health and proper eating, the GMO product is getting tarnished and spoken against in the media and around the dinner table.
Microorganisms have gene altered by adding antibacterial genes to plants, introducing genes to make the organisms hardier and bigger, making new flavors and options to the menu while adding  yields to the farmers pocket (explain the yields and new flavors more) in third world countries they have no luxury as there is in America. Storage is minimal, fresh food is the only food and verity is slim to none.  The GMOs are not only allowing Americas farmers to put food on their own tables but also expanding the range to feed other countries thought exporting goods. GMOs have increased Americas farmers yields by up to 40% this increase have dramatically affected Americas agriculture economy and the world allowance to feed more mouths. If other countries could get a chance at theses sciences and technologies they would have a higher chance at being closer to self-maintaining their own population.
Every day we eat, we consume GMOs. It is next to impossible to not have some interaction with these crops. How, you may ask? Picture this; the vegetables you buy at your local food market are most likely sprayed with chemicals altering their genetic makeup. If not there were grown within 3 miles of some that are allowing the air to drift over these “safe foods”. Next the meat you have consumed was most likely fed with a genetically modified corn silage or alfalfa, which would then transfer into the meat. Now you haven’t encountered any yet? Ok: the bio-fuel that was put into your car is ethnical base which is made from corn, most likely GMO grown.

The upper hand of genetically modified organisms allows more growth with in return allows the farmer to put less water and less work to obtain the same yields. GMOs are helping the local farmer and the large scale farmer rancher as well, they are able to grow more and feed more mouths. A farmer works tirelessly. As most people know a work day as being 9 to 5 and going home to a happy family the farmer works 5-9 and goes home exhausted from the previous days and wakes up more tired for the next day to come.: There is no sick days, no holidays and no sleep-ins: the cows must be feed every day at the same time and the crops mist be tented to. GMOs are a form of enhancement much alike steroids or Adderall. They allow more growth with less rest. This is a helping hand to the farmer. Crops have been around since mankind. The early farmers starved because they didn't understand how to enhance their production. Sciences have found compromises that ensure more grown which in return gives more food and income but they have also found a healthy safe way to produce the good. GMOs are a new way to feed the world. GMOs may be a way of life for some but they need to be seen as a way of the food industry of all.
